Qlarifi launches a real time BNPL credit database to give lenders improved visibility ahead of new regulation. Amsterdam, 22 April 2025 – Qlarifi, the first real time consumer credit database purpose built for Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) lending, officially launched a groundbreaking data sharing platform in the Netherlands to provide transparency, safeguard consumers and help providers make smarter, fairer real time lending decisions.

Traditional credit bureaus were designed for long term credit products, like overdrafts and personal loans, and are not equipped to handle real time updates from BNPL services. As such, BNPL providers typically do not report data to traditional bureaus. This gap has raised concerns that some consumers may borrow from multiple providers at once, without lenders having a full view of their total debt.

Qlarifi addresses this issue with a platform designed specifically for short term credit. Qlarifi’s solution tracks BNPL usage across providers, identifying loan stacking in real time, and surfacing insights that other credit bureaus can’t deliver. By providing secure, dynamic insights into consumer borrowing across providers without compromising privacy, Qlarifi thus empowers lenders to make better decisions and aligns with regulatory objectives. Its real time BNPL reporting solution, built with strong data protection by default and design, strengthens transparency, consumer protection and fraud detection.

"With a typical BNPL loan – say, for €100 – what really matters is how much credit someone has taken on in the last few minutes or days, not just their yearly income," said Alex Naughton, Co-founder and CEO of Qlarifi. "Our platform delivers that information immediately to all connected lenders. In contrast, traditional credit reports can be 30 to 60 days out of date. Qlarifi was designed specifically for BNPL. Our scalable technology provides the transparency the market urgently needs to safeguard consumers while enabling smarter, fairer and real time lending decisions."

The new platform has received a key endorsement from Klarna, the AI powered payments and shopping network, which operates globally and has a strong local presence in the Netherlands.

“We’re impressed by Qlarifi’s data sharing platform which is ready now to address BNPL data transparency ahead of BNPL regulation coming into force in 2026,” said Matt Scott, General Manager for the Netherlands. “The old credit reporting system was built for a different time. It can’t support the modern BNPL industry, which moves faster and needs up to date information.”

This partnership also brings Klarna closer to contributing and integrating data to BKR, the Netherlands’ official central credit registry.
